Fr. Michael's Notepad
SCHEDULING ACTIVITIES DURING GREAT LENT: As we enter this most sacred period of Great and
Holy Lent, the Church and all her organizations are reminded that our activities and attitudes should be consistent
with the sober and self reflecting disposition of the season. For this reason, all activities of organizations of the
Church scheduled between February 19th - April 8th must be cleared with Fr. Michael to insure that they do not
conflict with the weekly Lenten services and that they appropriately reflect the nature of the season. Only such
sanctioned meetings will be given permission to be posted in the Familian and Weekly Bulletins.
Thoughts on Great and Holy Lent: Just as our Lord retreated into the desert as an occasion for reflection, prayer
and introspection, so too are we called to follow His example as we prepare to meet Him in His Holy Passion and
Saving Resurrection. We remember that by engaging in the ascetical exercises of prayer and fasting our Lord
taught by example and gave us the Way to overcome the devil’s temptations. As Orthodox Christians, we are
called by the Church to follow our Lord into the desert and to struggle in such ascetical exercises so that we might
mortify the passions of pride, greed, lust, anger, gluttony, envy and sloth. In this way we will come to know the
Lord in a more perfect way and at the same time enter into more healthy and fulfilling relationship with others. In
order to assist us in such ascetical exercises, the Church invites us to partake in the rich array of Divine Services
and programs listed as follows:
GREAT COMPLINE: Comprised penitential psalms, hymns and prayers, the office of the Great Compline is
offered each Monday evening of the Lenten season at 6:00 pm. Service books are available in the Narthex as you
enter and you are kindly asked to return them upon leaving the Church so that they may be used throughout the
Great Lenten season. As this service precedes the weekly Road To Orthodoxy series, worshippers are encouraged
to remain in the sanctuary for catechetical instruction.
LITURGY OF THE PRESANCTIFIED GIFTS: Due to the penitential nature of the fast, no celebration of the
Divine Liturgy may take place on weekdays during the the Lenten Season, with the exception of the Feast of the
Annunciation. However, those who fast and properly prepare themselves to receive Holy Communion, may
partake of the Gifts sanctified at the preceding Sunday’s Divine Liturgy, as offered at the Liturgy of the
Presanctified Gifts; a Vesperal Liturgy which is designated solely to the period of Great and Holy Lent. Our
faithful will gather each Wednesday at 9:30am for this Liturgy. Bible Study & Confessions will follow at the
regular meeting hour of 11:00am/12:00pm.
SALUTATIONS TO THE BLESSED THEOTOKOS: On the first five Fridays of Lent, the Small Compline
service and the “Akathist Hymn” honor the Virgin Mary. The “Akathist Hymn,” one of the most beautiful and
beloved hymns of Orthodoxy, is an ecclesiastical poem about the Annunciation of the Mother of God (which
occurs during Lent) and the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Parishioners stand during the hymn, as
the word akathistos means “not seated”. The hymn contains 24 stanzas in order of the Greek alphabet. Each stanza
begins with a letter of the Greek Alphabet starting with Alpha and ending with Omega. A different stanza
(referred to as “Salutations to the Virgin Mary”) is sung on the first four Friday evenings of Lent, On the fifth
Friday, “The Akathist Hymn” is sung in its entirety. Each service concludes with the singing of “Ti Ipermacho”
(The Invincible Commander) by the entire congregation, a triumphant hymn about the Virgin Mary, the protector
of Constantinople. During the seventh century, she appeared in Constantinople during a siege by the Persians. The
enemy fled after their fleet had sunk, and the grateful citizens stayed up all night in church composing this hymn in
her honor. The most popular hymn in Orthodoxy, it is also sung along with the national anthem at major ethnic
holidays and in times of crisis. Singing of the Salutations will begin on Friday evenings at 7:00pm. The Ladies
Chant Group, directed by Connie Vrionis, will assist Fr. Michael in singing the Canon and beautiful responses at
both the Salutation and Akathist services. Service books will be available in the Narthex as you enter. You are
kindly asked to return them upon leaving the Church so that they may be used throughout the Great Lenten season.
