Fr. Michael's Notepad
GODPARENT SUNDAY: Perhaps the most sacred responsibility one can assume is the role of Godparent. In
times of antiquity it was the Church and not the parents who selected persons to assume this awesome
responsibility. Those undertaking such a role were and are expected to be knowledgeable as well as living the
Orthodox faith in their daily lives; thus, they teach by word and example. The Church has set aside Sunday,
March 18, 2007, as Godparent Sunday. Godparents and their Godchildren are asked to worship together and
prepare to receive Holy Communion.
OXFORD ROUNDTABLE: One of 35 educators, Fr. Michael, in his capacity of Principal of the Holy Trinity
Orthodoxy School, has been selected to participate in the prestigious Oxford Round Table at Pembroke College,
Oxford, England from March 23-30, 2007. The topic to be discussed will be Education for the Future: Public
versus Religious Schooling. While there, Fr. Michael will be presenting and defending a thesis paper, as well as
moderating one of the scheduled discussions. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San
Francisco, Fr. James Adams will be officiating at Holy Trinity Church for the Office of the Akathist and Divine
Liturgy for the Annunciation. In case of pastoral emergency during Fr. Michael’s absence, parishioners are asked
to please contact the Church Office.
SF METROPOLIS HISTORICAL SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM:
On Saturday, May 5, 2007, Holy Trinity will host this year's Symposium for Historical Societies within the Metropolis. This is an ideal event
for anyone who has an interest in Greek American history.
This year's symposium has a specific theme. Symposium attendees will be taken through a journey which begins with the era before Greek
communities were founded. Greeks and Russians worshiped together. This is particularly true for Holy Trinity. A historian and theologian from
the Russian Orthodox Church will be coming to speak on this topic.
Speakers will then discuss the founding of some of our oldest communities, specifically Seattle, Los Angeles, Oakland, & San Francisco. Greek
American authors such as Dr. James Dimitriou, Mr. Constantine Skedros, & Mrs. Theodora Argue will be speaking regarding the history of their
respective communities.
Later in the program attendees will hear a presentation on the history of the Daughters of Penelope from the historian of the founding
chapter. Attendees will hear presentations from two research institutions, the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute and the Salt Lake City
Greek History Museum. Mary Mousalimas from Ascension Cathedral will do a presentation on the history of the Oakland community and Fr. James Adams will end the
speaker's presentations with a talk about growing up Greek in the Bay Area.
