SF METROPOLIS REPRESENTED AT HISTORIC VATICAN CONVOCATION
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (Psalm 133)
As Metropolis Ecumenical Officer I traveled to Rome with an interfaith delegation of San Francisco religious and lay leaders to represent
His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco at the Vatican Consistory Ceremony on March 24 and Ceremony of the Rings on March 25,
2006. During these ceremonies, former Archbishop of San Francisco William Levada was elevated to the ranks of Cardinal by Pope Benedict
XVI. As part of the mission, I delivered a Resolution from the most recent Metropolis of San Francisco Clergy-Laity Assembly congratulating
and honoring Cardinal Levada on the occasion of his elevation. Last June, Levada was made Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of
the Faith, the position that Pope Benedict XVI held prior to his election as Pontiff.
While there, a strong conviction, realized through my ecumenical and interfaith involvement both as a seminarian and a priest, was
confirmed: that the Orthodox Church must be present and participating in the dialogue among the faiths. Three essential reasons for our
presence are these: To offer an Orthodox Christian witness, to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of one another's faiths;
and, to cultivate an environment where God's will for unity might be realized.
From the moment of arrival in Rome, I sensed a genuine appreciation for the presence of a representative of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis
of San Francisco at these ceremonies. Our 1,000 years of shared history and Orthodoxy's unbroken and pure expression of the faith, made ours
a welcome presence at this historic synaxis. Aside from attending the impressive liturgical rites held at the Vatican, I was thankful for
the many receptions offered to break bread with my fellow pilgrims. It was at these tables that I was invited to answer questions and share
the richness of the Orthodox Christian faith.
Likewise, by observing practices of commonality in our two traditions, I was better able to appreciate those pearls in our own Church, which
otherwise I might have taken for granted. Interestingly, our visit began with a penitential service at the 4th century Church of St. Mary
Major in the heart of Rome and ended with the first mass said by the newly elevated Cardinal Levada at his titular 9th century Church of Santa
Maria Dominica on the outskirts of the City. The latter was founded as a "house church" by the Archdeacon Laurence (a recognized Orthodox
saint) in the mid 3rd century and was adorned with a magnificent Byzantine Icon of Christ, the Virgin and Child, and 12 Holy Apostles.
Both sanctuaries were older than the schisms which divide our churches.
On a lighter note, I must confess to have gained a greater appreciation for the converts of our Church who have no understanding of the Greek
language, as most of the services we attended were in Latin, the only translation being in Italian. Over the years, some of the strongest
friendships I've maintained have been with clergy of other faiths. Indeed, so much that we commonly
experience in ministry transcends confessional boundaries. This trip was no exception, I returned having cultivated important relationships.
Retiring Episcopal Bishop William Swing affirmed these sentiments in a reflection offered at the conclusion of a meal at Castle Orsini on our
last night together. He cited as the reason for taking a famed pilgrimage to Constantinople, Rome and London with his fellow hierarchs of San
Francisco, our late Metropolitan Anthony's inspired thought, "Let us go together to the spiritual fathers of our mother churches and tell
them how much we love one another." As a result of that journey Metropolitan Anthony, Archbishop Levada and Bishop Swing returned changed
men; friends, whose churches had grown closer. It was this pilgrimage that Cardinal Levada recalled with deep emotion, more than once, in our
personal exchanges.
A final entry in my daily journal, penned before boarding the plane to return home, reads, " Those secure in their faith can venture into
such arenas without fear of losing their souls or compromising that which is most sacred....(and) In a world where fundamentalist religious
extremists seem to be the chief polarizing and dividing force on our planet, isn't it comforting to know that people of many faiths are
striving, each in their own way, to celebrate and bring about God's will for love, peace and harmony among people."

ROAD TO ORTHODOXY By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, persons not baptized and raised in the Orthodox Christian faith are seeking
a fundamental knowledge of our Church as a foundation for converting to Orthodoxy. Our Road To Orthodoxy (RTO) Class is an opportunity for
those contemplating converting to the faith to gather once a week on Monday evenings in the sanctuary from 7:00pm - 9:00pm for nine weeks
of basic instruction. These classes, along with personal consultation with Fr. Michael, are offered as a prerequisite for Adult Baptism
and/or Chrismation into the Orthodox faith. Orthodox Christian spouses are encouraged to join their partners in these classes. All interested
Orthodox Christians are also encouraged to attend to enrich their knowledge of the faith. The next series of classes will commence on Monday,
June 5, 2006, at 7:00pm in the sanctuary. An offering of $15.00 is asked to cover the cost of the text.
PRE-PENTECOST SATURDAY OF SOULS (PSYCHOSAVATON): Our deceased loved ones are remembered at a special service called "Saturday of the
Souls" held four times a year: the two Saturdays prior to Great and Holy Lent, the first Saturday of Lent and the Saturday falling on the
eve of Pentecost. We Orthodox believe that it is the duty of the living to pray for the dead. A general prayer is said for specific
individuals and all unknown souls who have no one to pray for them. This year's Pre-Pentecost Saturday of Souls will take place at Holy
Trinity Church on June 10, 2006: Orthros 9:00am/ Divine Liturgy 10:00am followed by the Memorial Service and Commemoration of the dead.
Parishioners are called to bring small dishes of Kollyva to the Church and to submit a list of names of deceased loved ones to the Father
Michael.
SPECIAL HOURS FOR PENTECOST OBSERVANCE: So as not to compromise the integrity of the beautiful kneeling vespers of Pentecost, yet at
the same time being sensitive to the lengthy nature of this Sunday observance, Orthros on Pentecost Sunday (11 June 2006) will begin at
8:00am and the Divine Liturgy at 9:00am followed by Pentecost Vespers. For those who might inadvertently come late on that Sunday, a pastoral
exception will be made, allowing those who are eligible and prepared to commune at the conclusion of services.
REMEMBER YOUR FATHER ON FATHERS' DAY What a rich blessing it is to remember our fathers on Fathers' Day. You are encouraged to attend
the Divine Liturgy, and to offer prayers of thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father for the gift of our earthly fathers, grandfathers and
godfathers. As well, you are invited to light a candle(s) for the health/memory of your beloved fathers. The names of those fathers for whom
candles were lit will be remembered in the Divine Liturgy. A Fathers Day luncheon with a sports theme will be sponsored by Philoptochos in the
Fellowship Hall following the Divine Liturgy.
HOLY TRINITY FEASTDAY Particular to each Orthodox parish is the honor given on the feastday to the one to whom the Church is
dedicated. We at Holy Trinity are blessed to have our parish dedicated to the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit, the "Trinity, One in essence
and undivided." It is the tradition of the Church to celebrate the feastday of the Holy Trinity on the Monday following Pentecost, the feast
of the sending of the Holy Spirit. Clergy and faithful of our neighboring parishes have been invited to concelebrate at the Divine Liturgy
on Monday, June 12, 2006, Orthros/9:00am and the Divine Liturgy/10:00am. As an expression of hospitality to all who will come to share in the
joy of our feastday, a complimentary luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall. Come and give thanks for the multitude of blessings which
the Holy Trinity continues to shower upon our blessed and historic parish.
HOLY APOSTLES FAST: This fast commemorates the Twelve Holy Apostles of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Although each of the
Apostles has his own feastday, the Church honors them collectively on June 30. With this feast we are reminded of the great contributions
they made and the positive role models they provide for generations of Christians. The Holy Apostles Fast begins on the eighth Sunday after
Easter (All Saints Sunday), this year June 19th and ends the evening of June 28. Some parishioners receive Holy Communion on June 29, the
Feast of Saint Peter and Paul, but the majority extend the fast in order to receive on June 30, the Feast of the Holy Apostles. For those
who observe this Lenten period, the fast is generally light, and fish, for example, is often eaten.
HOLY TRINITY HOSTS 2006 CHOIR CONFERENCE! Mark your calendars and spread the word...Holy Trinity will be hosting the 2006 Metropolis
of San Francisco Choir Federation Conference from June 29-July 1! This year's Choir Conference will include a number of social activities
at which the entire congregation will be invited to attend. The conference will culminate on Sunday with His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos
of SF celebrating the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity with a luncheon to follow. All of the faithful are encouraged to show
hospitality to the many choirs which will be attending from the seven Western United States. Details of the Metropolis Choir Conference
are included in this issue of The Familian. For volunteer opportunities please contact Chairperson Fareeda Christ or Choir Director, Voula
Brown.

themes of the Da Vinci Code and the Gospel of Judas from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Please visit www.goarch.org/en/special/DaVinci and

quarter only - January through March 2006 although they were mailed in April. They may not have reflected Easter donations and other
donations. If you have any questions, please call the church office and we will be happy to clarify any questions you might have.

CHOIR CONFERENCE NEWS & INFORMATION
Plans are proceeding well for the Church Musicians' Conference to be held the weekend of June 29 - July 2, 2006, culminating with the
celebration of Divine Liturgy with a choir of approximately 200 voices, including the adult choir, the youth choir and the chant group.
Many of you have asked how you can assist with this project. It's great to have so many supportive parishioners to assist us with this
ambitious endeavor. These are a few places where we could really use some help from our church community.
1. Do you have a business you'd like to advertise? Do you have a special sentiment you'd like to send out to someone in the church community? There is a memorial album printed for each year's conference. In this album, businesses and individuals can purchase ads to either talk about their business or send their greetings and good wishes to conference participants. Because of the high costs affiliated with having a conference in San Francisco, we are encouraging our community to support the conference by purchasing ad space or talking to their friends and acquaintances to purchase ad space. Any proceeds from the commemorative album will offset conference costs and supplement conference receipts; we hope that there will also be profit to benefit the church. If you are interested in procuring ad space in the commemorative album, please contact either Peter Roosakos or Tasia Mistos or contact the church office for a contract form.
2. Soon we will be making tickets available to our community to attend the social events connected to the upcoming conference. If you are
interested in purchasing tickets for the social events during the conference, please contact the church office for more details.
Saturday evening banquet will be held at the Westin Airport Hotel, the headquarters hotel for the conference, immediately following the
Vesper Service with Metropolitan Gerasimos scheduled for 6 p.m., which is also being held at the hotel. Come for Vespers and stay for
the banquet. Tickets will be available for $75 each.
Sunday immediately following Divine Liturgy, lunch will be served in the church auditorium. Tickets for lunch are available for $25 each.
Tickets are limited, so it is strongly suggested that you reserve them early.
3. Do you love to be around children? Do you love to do crafts or go to the zoo and/or aquarium? Are you just a big kid at heart? Do you
have tons of energy and love to spend it at play? If you have answered yes to these questions and you are over 18, we may be looking for you
to help out. As you already are probably aware, in addition to the adult choir and chant group attending the conference, we also hope to have
a youth choir in attendance. We are planning an outing to the San Francisco Zoo on Friday and an outing to Pier 39's Aquarium by the Bay on
Saturday, in addition to rehearsals and some craft projects. Several chaperones will be needed all weekend, both to accompany the young
people on the outings and to be available to help out during their choir rehearsals in preparation for Divine Liturgy on Sunday. If you're
interested in helping out with this, please contact Voula Brown for additional information.
Top of Page-->
Page 7
continued -->
4. Do you have a connection with an organization that gives promotional materials? Examples can include note pads, writing implements,
candy, cough drops, other edible items, visors, baseball caps, etc. The choir will be putting together a souvenir bag for all conference
participants. If there is anyone who can contribute promotional items, please contact either Fareeda Christ or Voula Brown.
5. Do you live near the church and can help out with putting together the souvenir bags for conference participants? A few people are
needed to help out with this job. It will probably be very close to the conference time, maybe the middle of June. Please contact Fareeda
Christ or Voula Brown for more information.
6. Do you love to prepare snacks? On Thursday evening, before the beginning of the conference, there are a couple of Federation business
meetings taking place at the hotel. It is traditional that the host parish provides snacks for the visiting board members and for those
conference participants who have arrived on Thursday. Therefore, we're looking for folks who can help with the preparation of snacks and
perhaps some shopping for drinks, etc.
Additionally, we will be providing hors d'oeuvres for conference participants during a fellowship hour on Friday evening. If you are
interested in helping out, please contact Voula Brown for more information.
Would you like to help out, but nothing here is speaking to you? Please let us know. Many other ways to help will come up between now and
the conference.
Thank you all for your continuing support of the choir. Your encouragement and assistance are always greatly appreciated.
