Fr. Michael Pappas

served 2004 - 2007
Fr. Michael

Fr. Michael was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He graduated from Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA) in 1983, after which he worked as a lobbyist for CN Communications, Inc., then as the Northern New Jersey Regional Field Director for Reagan-Bush '84. Following the campaign, he began his career as an investment banker for JB Hannauer & Co., the oldest municipal bond firm in New Jersey. In 1987, Father Michael left the world of politics & finance and enrolled at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, graduating with honors in the Class of 1992. Father and Presvytera Alexandra were blessed with two sons, George and Paul, and one daughter, Julia.

Prior to serving at Holy Trinity Fr. Michael served at Sts. Constantine and Helen, Palos Hills, Ill. (1991-1994), and St. Basil, Stockton: 1994-2004.

Fr. Michael came to Holy Trinity in August 2004, after the passing of our beloved pastor of 49 years, Fr. Anthony Kosturos. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Fr. Michael served as the Principal of the Holy Trinity Orthodox School, Northern California Ecumenical Officer for the SF Metropolis, and as a Columnist for the Hellenic Journal. He also served on the San Francisco Interfaith Council and frequently volunteered for SF Project Homeless Connect.

Fr. Michael initiated many programs at Holy Trinity. He revitalized church organizations which had become inactive and worked with our youth. He worked with Bay Area religious communities and in three short years brought Holy Trinity into the public eye and into a position of prominence.

On August 20, 2007, the San Francisco Metropolis suspended Fr. Michael from active ministry within the Greek Orthodox Church and released him from all priestly and pastoral duties. The SF Metropolis appointed Fr. James Adams as interim priest. On August 21, 2007, Fr. Michael resigned from his position at Holy Trinity and petitioned the SF Metropolis to be released from the priesthood. In October 2007, he was selected by the San Francisco Interfaith Council to the newly created administrative staff post, Executive Director. He continues to live and work in the city of San Francisco.
