SAN FRANCISCO - The Sacred: So, Friday night, William Cardinal Levada, having just become a cardinal, was standing in the Roman rain near the
Piazza del Popolo, talking on a cell phone — to someone standing on Vallejo Street in San Francisco. … That someone, touched by the surprise
call, was Angela Alioto. When Levada phoned, Angela was working her shift as a volunteer at the 157-year-old St. Francis Shrine to which she
is devoted. Levada’s Roman aides, eager to move him onto the next event, were stunned by the amount of time he spent talking with Angela.
She’s done a lot for him. ... And, now, her lovely, little, struggling St. Francis Church has a friend in Rome. … Angela was to have led The
City’s delegation to Levada’s elevation, but a court case kept her here. However, she organized the group, including Muslim representation
— a first for a Roman consistory. … When Levada telephoned Angela in The City, he was just leaving the party the S.F. group gave him at the
Hotel Valadier. As Levada had entered the hotel’s dark-paneled lounge for the reception, the bar pianist suddenly segued from the usual soft
jazz into a soaring rendition of Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” Now that’s a Roman bar. … In the S.F. delegation: leader Joe Veronese
