Where, in the former Ottoman lands, did Orthodox Christians and Muslims keep the peace — without expulsions? Drawing on the first Albanian autobiography, the boyhood memoir of the future Patriarch Athenagoras, and a 1919 statement signed by 3,041 Orthodox Christians, this talk asks what made those friendships strong, and what they might teach us now — as we prepare to welcome musicians from Epiros, and as our dance groups explore the region through its music and dance.
